ZDHC and JINTEX: Going Green, Reducing Waste, and Eliminating Harmful Chemicals!
For years, Greenpeace, the international environmental organization, has been advocating for pollution prevention and the protection of our planet, promoting the concept of toxin-free production and emissions that safeguard the environment and human health. Now, the movement toward a toxin-free world has made its way into the textile industry, sparking global interest and attention to toxin-free fashion and sustainability.
JINTEX, a pioneer in the industry, became the first company in Asia to formally join ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals), boasting more than 320 3-star-rated products on the ZDHC GATEWAY platform. In 2016, JINTEX served as a demonstration unit for ZDHC chemical safety control training, playing a crucial role in adhering to green textile standards.
It All Started with Detox.
The Detox movement, initiated by Greenpeace, is an initiative focused on textile and leather supply chain businesses. In 2011, Greenpeace began the Detox campaign, claiming that global fashion brands and their suppliers bore direct responsibility for the worldwide contamination of water with toxic substances, making consumers unwitting conspirators.
Detox called for the discontinuation of harmful chemical substances that disrupt human hormones and the release of these chemicals into waterways. Greenpeace continuously monitored various major brands, exposing several industry giants, and public opinion roared in response. Major brands responded one after another. As Detox continued to gain momentum, its influence on the industry grew significantly.
What is ZDHC?
Due to the immense pressure brought about by Detox, multiple major international clothing and footwear brands jointly launched the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) initiative. This initiative pledged to lead the entire value chain of the industry to eliminate hazardous chemicals in production by 2020, thereby reducing environmental harm and improving human livelihood.
The ZDHC program focuses on four key areas and two cross-sector areas, all of which are critical for the elimination of hazardous chemicals in textile and leather supply chain businesses. These areas include the Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MSRL), wastewater quality, audit protocols, and chemical safety management training services.
